Produced in more than 20,000 examples, starting in 1941, it was, along with the Messerschmitt Bf 109 the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 double-starred 14-cylinder radial engine with 1,700 Hp that allowed it to reach a top speed of 653 km/h. It was heavily armed with 2 MG 131 machine guns and 4 MG 151 20 mm cannons. In early 1944 the A-8 version characterized by an injection system capable of briefly increasing engine power to more than 1,900 Hp went into production. Aboard the famous fighter flew the best Luftwaffe pilots during World War II.
